Biology Program

  1. GOAL

In keeping with the mission of Mother Patern, the faculty and staff of the Biology Department are committed to providing the highest quality experiences for undergraduate students. We offer a vibrant curriculum and extensive opportunities for mentoring and hands-on research experiences as a means of developing a deeper understanding of biology at the levels of molecules, cells, organisms, and the ecosystem. We stress the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills both in the classroom and in the field.

  • SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Considering that biology is a gate way course to wide range of opportunities, we at Mother Patern are concern with equipping our students academically and morally so as to produce professionals who can defend their qualifications and solve problems that relate to the field of biology.

We are also concerned with producing students who are able to think outside the box, bringing ingenuity to their professional work. We make it our paramount objective to provide our students with the right foundation to pursue further education in Medical and Paramedical disciplines, and the sciences (Microbiology, Parasitology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Health System Management, Public Health, Environmental Health, Anatomy, Physiology, Reproductive Health, Biomedical Research, etc).

  • ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Entry requirements are outlined in seven (7) steps:

  1. Candidate must complete application form and return it on the set dates
  2. Entrants must be a high school graduate evidenced by sitting and passing the 12th grade WAEC examinations, and must have a pass in MATHEMATICS, ENGLISH and all the science subjects. (BIOLOGY, PHYSICS, and CHEMISTRY)
  3. Entrants must sit and pass the entrance examination in MATHEMATICS and ENGLISH administered by the school.
  4. Entrants must provide letters of recommendation from high school, a spiritual head or a permanent community resident. Transcript of high school work must be provided by the high school in question.
  5. Entrants must sit and pass an interview conducted by the Biology department. Interviews are bordered on all documents presented and student’s ability to perform high I.Q. tasks.
  6. High school students sitting the WASSE exams may sit the entrance exams provided they bring their last grade sheet and letter of recommendation from their high school.
  7. All candidates who are successful in the interview will be granted admission into the program
  1. CORE VALUES OF THE BIOLOGY PROGRAM

The Biology department values the followings:

  • Believes in creating an enabling environment that is broad and challenging; focusing on regular updated curricula that ear-mark intensive theoretical course work, practical laboratory course work and at the end of every semester field trips that give students practical experiences on the environments and habitats of organisms studied in class.
  • Believes also in our teaching staff and or faculty being engaged, diverse, creative, responsive (approachable) and dedicated excellent teaching, research and service at all times and levels.
  • Believes in nurturing our students, developing their skills, building their capacities and helping them gain sound foundation in biological guidelines and procedures; this will create future opportunities for our graduating seniors.
  • And the department believes in preparing the students for the challenges ahead, igniting their curiosities into searching for new knowledge, and allowing them to have an open minded approach to the world around them.
  1. DURATION OF THE PROGRAM and TATAL CREDIT HOURS

The duration for the biology program is four (4) academic years (eight semesters).

The TOTAL CREDIT HOURS to cover the four (4) years Program is 135 and the TOTAL Laboratory hours is 25. The overall credit hours totaled 160 (Instructional time/135 and laboratory/25).

  1. TEACHING METHODOLOGY

We at the level of Mother Patern are equipped with up-to-date books, as we engage our students in interactive lectures, supplementary videos, lab demonstrations, flipcharts and more engaging assignments and presentations.

  • EVALUATION

The College adapts a technique that allows thorough evaluation for both students and teachers.

For student evaluation, they are evaluated on the premise of how well they understand and are able to use the scientific concept and principles that they have been taught. In view of this, quiz(zes) and class activities are given to encourage students to keep active in class and do follow up reading and research.

Major tests, midterm and final exams are given to check students overall progress and understanding of the material. Practical exams are also given to allow students apply their understanding of practical application of scientific principles. We normally encourage our instructors to use the followings: Formative and Summative assessments.

The instructors are evaluated at the end of every semester by the students and their retention is based on the students’ recommendations. The College has a prepared evaluation template for the students always use.
